如 “川连 ” ,在原有翻译 “Chuan Lian” 的基础上增加其含义的翻译,翻译成 “This herb is named according to the place where it grows. “Chuan” indicates Si Chuan Province in China. “Lian” is the short form for the herb
“Huang Lian”. It means that “Huang Lian” growing in Sichuan Province has the best quality.”。
3.2 以药物功效命名
如“ 骨碎补 ” ,在原有翻译成 “Gu Sui Bu” 的基础上增加其含义的翻译,翻译成“ This herb is named according to the therapeutic effect. The herb means in Chinese character that a broken bone could be mended. It is good for patients with fractures. It has the function of reinforcing the kidney and strengthening bones, activating blood flow and removing blood stasis.” 。
3.3 以形色、气味命名
如“牛膝”,在原有翻译成“Niu Xi”的基础上增加其含义的翻译,翻译成“ This herb is named accordintg to the shape and flavor. The herb means the stem of this herb is as big as the knee of a cow.”.还有“ 五味子” , “ It means that this herb has five different flavors.”。
3.4 以采集、炮制命名
如“冬桑叶”,“酒大黄”,在原有翻译成“Dong Sang Ye”和“Jiu Da Huang”的基础上增加其含义的翻译,翻译成“These herbs are named according to collection and processing. “Dong” indicates winter. It shows that the herb is collected in winter to enhance its therapeutic effect 。“Jiu”indicates wine. It means the herb “Da Huang” is processed with wine.” 。
3.5 以药用部分命名

3.6 以颂扬医生的高超技艺而命名
如“使君”。在原有翻译成“Shi Jun”的基础上增加其含义的翻译,翻译成 “This herb is named according to the skillful technique of TCM physician. It is reported in ancient time that there was a TCM physician called Guo Shijun. He often used a kind of seed to treat intestinal worms of infants with satisfactory effect. Later this herb was named “Shi Jun” to honor this TCM physician.” 。
3.7以译音而命名
如 “ 筚拨” 和 “ 西洋参 ” ,在原有翻译成“Bi Bo” 和 “Xi Yang Shen” 的基础上增加其含义的翻译,翻译成“These herbs are named according to phonetic translation. Some herbs are not grown in China and should be imported from abroad, such as “Bi Bo” and “Xi Yang Shen” (American Ginseng).” 。
